The Imperial Navy has been established from the Navies of Aquilia, Lucia and Viridia. The Imperial Navy currently operated 92 surface and submarine vessels of various classes. Its primary purpose is to deter and deny any potential invasion of any lands held by the sovereign Iconian state.

The Imperial Navy maintains a fleet of technologically sophisticated ships, submarines, and aircraft, including three amphibious platform docks, four landing platform docks, nine nuclear submarines, nine attack submarines, four fast replenishment ships, six landing crafts, 16 mine countermeasure ships, one signal intelligence ship, twenty corvettes, 14 frigates and six destroyers. As of 2021, the total displacement of the Imperial Navy was approximately 384,000 tonnes.

The professional head of the Imperial Navy is the Comes Rei Classis and a member of the Defence Council of the Iconian Empire. The Defence Council delegates management of the Navy to the Admiralty Board, chaired by the Magister Equitum. The Imperial Navy operates from X bases in the Iconian Empire where commissioned ships and submarines are based: Portsmouth, Clyde and Devonport, and naval air stations operated with the IAF. The Iconian Navy also possesses two abroad bases in Cadenza and Ameta.

History The history of naval warfare dates back to the 80 BC when the first documented battle between two sides occurred and 250 MT when the first seaworthy ship has been constructed. Following these two main events, the Navy has been in a constant state of development. The following crucial step was the acquisition of gunpowder and cannons from the friendly nation of Edusa, which allowed the independence of the Aquilian kingdom during the era of colonisation by Anderia and Dolfiksrike. The current state of the Navy has been achieved after an almost three thousand years long history of seafaring by the Iconian people.

The Navy has undergone its most significant challenge during the Great War when it has managed to defeat an invasion of Iconia at the loss of a significant portion of its ships. The following help offered by the Eusonia and Kerthenia has allowed the renewal of the Imperial navy fleet and know-how transferred during the cooperation following the war.

Role

The leading operative and strategic duties, roles and missions of the Imperial Navy, the main seaborne branch of the IDF, are as follows.

  • Sea control and denial
  • Maintenance of Sea Lines of Communication - for Protecting the Economy of Iconia.
  • Deterrence - for Prevention of Conflict on the global and regional level.
  • Maritime security - To ensure the stability of international trade at sea
  • Sealift - To provide humanitarian aid and response to any catastrophe.

Personnel

Aurelian Training Centre serves as the primary training facility for newly enlisted sailors. The Iconian Naval College of Lucia is the central institution for officer training. In 2020, the Imperial Navy personnel was established to be around 60 thousand.

Titles and naming

Ships and submarines in commission are prefixed since 1789 with His/Her Imperial Majesty Ship/Submarine (HIMS). Names are allocated to ships and submarines by a naming committee within the Imperial Navy and given by the class. Names are frequently re-used, offering a new ship the rich heritage, battle honours and traditions of her predecessors. Often, the first vessel of a specific class will be named after the class name. As well as a name, each ship and submarine is given a code which in part denotes its role. For example, the S-15 denotes a submarine.

Customs and traditions

Ensigns

Commissioned ships and submarines wear the Naval Ensign at the stern whilst alongside during daylight hours and at the main-mast whilst underway. When alongside, the Union Jack is flown from the jackstaff at the bow but can only be flown underway on particular circumstances. To indicate an Admiral or Governmental figure's presence, his/her symbol is flown from the highest hoist. A ceremony might accompany the raising and lowering of the flag.

Ship badges

The Imperial Navy Advisor on Heraldry and its committee assign badges to every ship and submarine.

Joint projects

The Imperial Navy has plants to introduce new classes of vessels in the following years. The primary goal is to launch new Nestion-class Submarine co-developed with the Dolfik Kingdom. The Kolonian republic joined the project as a recipient in 2020. Among other projects is the Future Multipurpose Destroyer Vessel (FMDV) developed with Serria, looking for a proposals of replacement of current Esgardir-class destroyers. The admiralty has expressed concerns about this project as the proposition of replacing the Esgardir with already developed Thereon-class Imperial Frigates. The FRI is developing a new Patrol Ship project focused on small reliable vessel. The FRI was also aided in development of their indigenous destroyer which influenced the development of the Esgardir-class.

The main foreign supplier of the Iconian navy and enterprises developing ships for the navy is the Klathunian companies supplying precise weapon barrels and kinetic energy weapon systems, the IKZ supplying the sensor and detection systems and Icaria who helped develop some of the propulsion systems for various ships before its collapse.
