Pargesia, formally the Kingdom of Pargesia, is a sovereign state in northern Andolia. Its lands connect the continents of Andolia and Cancodia, sharing transcontinental borders with Andolian countries Dolfik Kingsrike in the west, Avellum in the north, and Strutan in the south-east. Its eastern coast meets the Nuntic Ocean and the Teme River demarcates Pargesia's southern border. As a geographical crossroads, numerous tribes settled in the area from all over the two continents. They were first united in circa 50 CE by Traestan. After centuries of Dolfik and Serrian rule, mostly assisted by the local Andoli Serrian aristocracy, Pargesia became formally independent on February 22, 1901.

Today, Pargesia has a developed market with a high human development index. Strict safety regulations, guaranteed economic freedoms, tuition-free secondary education, and universal healthcare significantly provide citizens with high living standards. In spite of the parliamentary system in place, the monarch assumes an active executive role as head of the nation. Its citizens do not enjoy the expected rights and benefits of a democratic and civil society seen in most liberal countries, leading some to describe the current regime as an "authoritarian democracy." Its aristocratic oligopolists control various sectors of an otherwise diversified economy via cartels. With a significant rural population, it is a major exporter of agricultural goods. It is a member of the Nuntic Union and an active participant in the Nuntic Collective Security Umbrella.

Etymology and terminology

The name Pargesia originated from Parrhasius, a Traestani commander who united the territory in 50 AD. It was known as "Provincia Pargecium" in the Traestani Empire. When it was liberated by the Serrians from the Tergniyans in 1348, the First Kingdom emerged as "Regnum Pargecium." The Third Pargesian Independence War reunited the two territories as "Principato di Pargezia" in personal union with Serria. In 1901, the newly-crowned King Oberto I of the newly-independent nation was proclaimed "Re di Pargezia."

History

Medieval period

Iconian crusaders who helped Serria establish the feudal order in Crusader Pargesia are also ancestors of some of the oldest noble families in modern-day Pargesia.
